The VSB employes Multicultural Liason Workers (MCLWS) and Settlement Workers (SWIS) to support families

Multicultural Liaison Workers (MCLWS) are cultural and linguistic resource staff of the Vancouver Board of Education, under the ELL support services of the Newcomer Welcome Centre. They are available to support students, families, and school personnel by facilitating communication despite linguistic or cultural differences.

The Settlement Workers in Schools (SWIS) Program, funded by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), is a school-based service designed to support immigrants, refugees, and other eligible newcomers with their immediate and ongoing settlement needs after arriving in Canada.

Once registered, a designated settlement worker will connect with the newcomer family to assist students and their families in adjusting to their new school, community, and life in Canada. This support is part of the Vancouver School Board’s commitment to providing integrated settlement services.
