year-one accessibility plan

VANCOUVER, B.C. – June 1, 2026 – The Vancouver School Board (VSB) shares the first-year progress update about its Accessibility Plan, outlining work underway to improve access to learning and working environments for students, families, staff and community members.

The update highlights actions taken during the 2025–2026 school year to identify, remove and prevent barriers, guided by the Accessible BC Act and informed by advice from VSB’s accessibility committee.

In the first year of the plan’s implementation, work focused on building awareness, strengthening staff practice and improving systems and processes that support accessibility across schools and worksites.

Key areas of progress

Progress in the first year reflects priorities identified in the Accessibility Plan, including:

  • Expanding professional learning and training to build staff understanding of accessibility and inclusive practices
  • Increasing opportunities to learn from students and staff with lived or learned experience of disability
  • Integrating accessibility into communications and digital content
  • Advancing physical accessibility through capital planning and upgrades
  • Supporting the development of accessible playgrounds
  • Enhancing access to information and promoting the accessibility reporting tool

The update also summarizes feedback received through the accessibility reporting tool and how schools and departments have responded.

Work to advance accessibility continues, with priorities informing years two and three of the Accessibility Plan.
