On May 22, Windermere Secondary welcomed students of life skills programs at Gladstone, Tupper, John Oliver and Hamber Secondary for a deep sea–themed carnival. Students wandered the halls, following arrows from colorful hand-painted signs to various wacky and wonderful underwater themed activities.

Students enjoyed live music performances, a disco room, a photo booth, a calming zen room, carnival games in the gym and outdoor adventures.

Music was a central part of the day, with students swaying and dancing to performances by Windermere’s rock band in the morning and Mr. Mike’s “rockin’” piano show in the afternoon. Many enthusiastic students even took to the stage themselves.

Another popular music and dance event was a silent disco, where students could choose between no music, Disney, rock or chill playlists. The disco was a huge hit, with many students saying it was their favorite activity.

One student, Liam from Windermere Secondary, said he enjoyed the day a lot. His highlight, he shared, “was doing the land acknowledgement speech.”

Triana from Windermere, using her Boardmaker speech device, said “yes” when asked if she was having fun. She also shared that she felt both happy and tired, pointing to symbols on her device.

When feeling tired or overstimulated students could rest and reset in the augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) games room or the jellyfish zen lounge.

Creating the many different zones required creativity and thoughtful planning. Mr. Jonathon Wyn, teacher and department head of life skills, thanked the Windermere school community for organizing the event.

“All the work that has been put in, is just a real tribute to the team here at Windermere. The best buddies program and the leadership program have been terrific in helping us and supporting us through this event.”

Students brought Windermere Secondary to life, filling the day with laughter, music, and connection. Their creativity and friendships shaped the carnival, reminding everyone that community is made by the people within it.
