Regional Skills Competitions and next steps

Culinary Arts

Each year from February to March, Skills Canada BC hosts regional trades and technology competitions throughout the province. Winners are then promoted to the Provincial Skills Canada competition held on April 17th in Abbotsford.

Last week, on Saturday April 6th, the final Regional Skills competition took place at Eric Hamber Secondary. Categories included baking, culinary arts, fashion technology and a new category, job skills demonstration. Jordan-Mae, won GOLD in the inagural Job Skills Demonstration category by creating a presentation on “How to Repair Drywall.”  In her demonstration she talked about the skills she learned in participating in Skills Canada.

“I am learning about adaptability, overcoming and bouncing back quickly to any of the questions you have since anything can go wrong in the presentation.  In researching for things throughout the project, I was taking the information, understanding it, transforming it, and writing it.”

Students communicating what they have learned is foundational to B.C.’s curriculum which emphasizes communication as a core competency.

In addition to the categories mentioned above, additional regional competitions were held over the past months in various locations.  The list below outlines all the categories VSB students participated in.  Many thanks to Mark Reid, District Resource Teacher for the Careers Program, and the teachers who’ve mentored and supported these students in preparation for competition.
