Venture

The Venture Info Session for Sept 2025 entry will be held in-person on Thurs, Oct 24, at 7:00 pm.

It will be held at Britannia Secondary School Auditorium

The Britannia Venture Program is an academically challenging program that provides a unique educational experience for motivated students in Grades 8, 9, and 10.

Through independent and shared learning experiences, Venture students engage in learning designed to develop critical problem-solving capabilities and the academic skills required for success in their post-secondary education. Venture gathers students with like-minded peers for support and encouragement. The program is recommended for students who are:

  • Inquisitive and avid learners
  • Self-motivated and enjoy collaboration
  • Generally performing at 'proficient' or higher levels

The Venture Classmate Profile outlines the characteristics that we as Venture learners strive to be:

  • Open-minded – we listen to others and encourage constructive debate. We appreciate that ideas different from our own provide a spark for discussion and are not “wrong”. We accept differences of opinion and constructive criticism.
  • Trusting – we recognize that a positive group dynamic depends upon building trust. We consciously look for chances to build that trust. We acknowledge when our trust has been broken and we seek to redress the situation as quickly as possible.
  • Respectful – we accept differences and respect people in all ways; emotional, intellectual, cultural, and physical. We recognize that our strength comes from our collective efforts and that everyone has a role to play in these efforts. We know when to be serious and attentive, and when to have fun and socialize.
  • Welcoming – we acknowledge newcomers and visitors with respect and a warm welcome. We believe that newcomers to the class enrich it for everyone. We make an effort to help new classmates assimilate into our school.
  • Caring – we understand that everyone has bad days and tough spots in school and in life. We are there to help as best we can but we also give people the room they need to solve their own problems. We advocate for our classmates when appropriate and seek advice from our teachers and counselors on how best to help them.
  • Cooperative – we recognize that our strength is a collective strength. While we all have talents we know that sharing these make us better as individuals and as a class. We do our part in projects and encourage others to do theirs to the best of their ability. We help each other.
  • Risk-takers – we recognize that some risks are positive and we take on challenges willingly. We ask questions and offer answers, even if we’re not sure of ourselves. We make a point of talking with everyone in the class, not just our friends. We try new experiences that can help others and ourselves.
  • Leaders – we know that success requires teamwork and that good teams need good leaders. We model good leadership by our organization, support, perseverance, and courage.
  • Balanced – we know that people need to learn but also need to be healthy and contribute to the greater good of their school and community. We volunteer and participate and create.
  • Enthusiastic – we love what we do and are excited to learn. We do our best at every opportunity and show good humour as we work. We look for the positive in every situation and celebrate our successes.

Britannia Secondary’s diverse student body presents a microcosm of the world community. For Venture students, this provides unique learning opportunities in cooperation, social justice, and leadership that will deepen their understanding of the relationship between local issues and global challenges.

Venture also serves as preparation for students pursuing enrichment in the Grade 11&12 International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IBDP). For over 30 years, many Britannia students have successfully completed this unique pathway of a challenging, globally-recognized program of student enrichment.
