VDSC’s most treasured initiative: The CANley Cup

Each year, the Vancouver District Students Council (VDSC) plan and host their annual Canley Cup ; a District-wide event that aims to raise non-perishable food items for the community through cans and monetary donations. VDSC members Tiffany Tang, (Grade 11, Vancouver Technical Secondary), Paige Cheng (Grade 12, Britannia Secondary), Mia Liu (Grade 11, Lord Byng Secondary), and Mackenzie Chung (Grade 10) announce this year's winners in their guest writer piece.

With winter break right around the corner, the season of giving has started! With help from ambitious representatives from VSB secondary schools, the VDSC kicked off its annual initiative – the CANley Cup.

One of VDSC’s most treasured initiatives, the CANley Cup is a District-wide fundraiser competition where schools work to raise money and non-perishable items for the Vancouver community. The food and money raised will provide families, new Canadians, seniors, breakfast and lunch programs with nourishment for the holiday season.

In contrast to past years, where all CANley cup proceeds went to the Greater Vancouver Food Bank, this year’s guidelines provided options for schools to partner with local organizations to promote community engagement. For example, proceeds from Magee Secondary went to Project Hastings and collections from Vancouver Technical Secondary stayed at the school to support families in need within the school community.

To promote the CANley cup, the VDSC encouraged schools to hold friendly competitions. Schools hosted a variety of promotional events, including “Teacher VS Student” sports games, hot chocolate sales, movie nights, and spirit weeks. Many schools offered bubble tea, pizza parties, and even the opportunity to pie their teacher in the face for donations!

As anxiously anticipated, the CANley trophy was awarded to the school with the most cans per person ratio. Participating schools fundraised a total of 250k cans across the District this year! with first place goes to Point Grey Secondary with an astounding 59 cans per person. Second place goes to Magee Secondary, and Vancouver Technical obtained third!

The VDSC feels incredibly honoured to host the CANley cup event this year. The results from this year really show that students can accomplish great feats when they unite as a community. Congratulations to this year’s CANley cup winners!

We are also beyond grateful for the enthusiasm shared by students in all of VDSC’s recent endeavours throughout the 2022-2023 school year so far. In the new year, we look forward to further inter-school relations through events such as Sister School Switch and the Arts Gala.

In the meantime, keep an eye out for updates on VDSC’s Instagram channel!
