Skills Canada BC marks 30 years!

Car Painting

This year’s Skills Canada BC saw 33 students from the Vancouver School District participated in more than 10 categories at this year’s Skills Canada BC.

Hosted in Abbotsford Tradex, the atmosphere appeared extra busy as they celebrated their 30th year of competition.

More than 600 secondary and post-secondary students who medaled at regional competitions from around the province competed in a wide variety of trades and technology competitions –  from fashion, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, baking, welding, graphic design, 3D animation and more.

Here is a glimpse of the fully charged atmosphere on competition day.

Junior competition categories included Gravity Vehicle, Spaghetti Bridge and Wind Turbine, with students ranging from grade 8 to 10. Being new to the scene, watch what the Junior competitors had to say.

Mike Hengeveld, Templeton Secondary STEM teacher and provincial technical chair for the Junior Wind Turbine at Skills Canada BC says, “It’s a lot of fun watching students take concepts they will learn in science class like voltage and current and power, and in a situation like this find out what it all means and figuring things out for the first time!”

Final Deliberations were made in the evening by 6PM.

GOLD medalists will continue to compete at the Skills Canada National Competition at the end of May.

Special thanks to the teachers who’ve mentored and supported VSB students in preparation for competition.
