Overdue Books and Computer Alerts

LESSON #5:
OVERDUE BOOKS & SOUNDS HEARD IN THE LIBRARY

OVERDUE BOOKS

It shouldn't come as a surprise to any of you, but there are many students who now have overdue library books. There are even a few students who owe books from last year.

Ms. Bombino sends reminder notices to students via email and/or print out notices to the Block 1.1 teachers. But sometimes it takes until the end of the year to resolve matters.
When you scan a Go-Card for a student with overdues, the computer will make a noise (a sort of a honking sound).  If you hear a noise (other than the usual beep of the scanner) stop and read what appears on the screen.

The main thing to remember about Overdues is that students with overdues cannot borrow any more books until the overdues are returned or renewed.
Other reasons why the sound / beep on the computer may be different:

Sometimes there are messages for students.

Sample messages that may pop up & What to do?

  • CREDIT = The student is getting a refund for something that they had lost & paid for.
What to do? Call Ms. Bombino to the desk and she will find out who owes the student money & tell the student what needs to be done. It is usually an elementary school library that needs to refund the money.
  • PLEASE TAKE BETTER ... or TAKE BETTER CARE OF ...
This message is incomplete because there isn't enough space in the message box. If you click on the DETAILS button at the bottom of the screen, you will see that the full message has more information: Example: Please take better care of our books
What to do? Just remind student to take better care of the book, or call Ms. Bombino to the desk and she will handle the task.
  • DAMAGES = Exactly as this says, the student has damaged a library book & can not borrow anything until he/she pays for the book.
What to do? Call Ms. Bombino to the desk & she will handle the issue.

OTHER SOUNDS IN THE LIBRARY?

THE ALARM FOR THE EXIT / SECURITY GATE:

Hopefully this will not happen very often but, sometimes the exit gate alarm is triggered you will hear a series of loud beeps.

The exit gates are there to make sure that no one steals any books.

This is rarely the case. Templeton students are honest ... but they may have forgotten to check out their books.

Most of the time the gate alarm is set off for other reasons.
For example:

REASON WHAT TO DO?
Too many students in the gate section at the same time   Ask students to step off of the mat, come back into the library and then exit in single file
Library monitor (you) forgot to de-sensitize the book(s) at check out time.   De-sensitize the book and apologize for the error.
Student has a Public Library book.   De-sensitize the book and remind students to give you VPL books before they leave next time.
Student has forgotten to check out the book Ask student to come up to the circulation desk, and have a library monitor complete the check out process.

ABOUT THE SECURITY SYSTEM...
When the alarm beeps, please do not ignore the sound.

The system is new so when it will be set off for a reason. Please do your best to handle the situation until the teacher on duty comes up to the desk.

Thank you.
