Introduction

French 12 is a 4-credit course that counts towards the graduation portfolio in British Columbia high schools. The course uses the Vista Higher Learning (VHL) online program called “D’Accord”. The program covers the main skills of language learning through written/reading tasks as well as aural/oral activities. The course consists of five units that are each developed around a theme which presents useful vocabulary and grammar structures along with cultural components. See below for further information on the unit content. At the end of the course, a key audio-visual project is presented as a culminating activity.

Where does this course fit?

  • Pre-requisite:  French 11 (4 CREDITS)
  • Graduation Status: Grade 12 elective for graduation

Course Materials

  • It is strongly recommended that you use a laptop or desktop computer running Windows, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Audio and recording capability are also mandatory.
  • A properly functioning audio/recording system is required for the many oral/aural tasks included in the program.

UNITÉ 3 

L’INFLUENCE DES MÉDIAS

  • learn vocabulary related to the media, people of the media, film, television, and the press
  • learn the passé composé (with avoir and être)
  • learn about the uses of passé compose  as compared to the imparfait
  • read an excerpt from the novel, 99 Francs, by writer Frédéric Beigbeder

UNITÉ 4 

LA VALEUR DES IDÉES

  • learn vocabulary related to the law, legal rights, politic, public officials, and national security
  • learn the plus-que-parfait, and about irregular IR verbs
  • learn about négation and indefinite adjectives and pronouns
  • read writer Victor Hugo’s speech “Détruire la misère”

UNITÉ 6 

LES GÉNÉRATIONS QUI BOUGENT

  • learn vocabulary related to family life, food, personality, and stages of life
  • study the subjunctive and demonstrative pronouns
  • study irregular -re verbs
  • read Oliver Charneaux’s La logique des grands

UNITÉ 8 

S’ÉVADER ET S’AMUSER

  • learn vocabulary related to sports, leisure time, arts, shopping, and clothes
  • study prepositions with geographical names
  • study the conditionnel and different uses of infinitives
  • · read Jean-Jacque Sempé and René Goscinny’s story Le football

UNITÉ 10 

LES RICHESSES NATURELLES

  • learn vocabulary related to animals, nature, nature phenomena, and making use of nature or destroying it
  • study and practice the conditionnel passé & futur simple
  • study and practice si clauses
  • read Jean-Baptiste Tati Loutard’s poem Baobab
