Tips and Guidelines

Suggestions from Ms. Bombino

What to include in your oral presentation:

  1. Introduce the title and author of the novel.
  2. Describe the type of book it is (i.e. Genre: Mystery / Science Fiction / Romance / LGBTQ2S / Canadian, etc.).
  3. Briefly describe the setting.
  4. Give a brief description of the plot.  What is it about? 
    But do not give away the ending.
  5. Briefly talk about the main character(s).
  6. Mention one or two strengths and/or weaknesses of this book.
  7. Tell your audience if you liked or disliked the book. Explain why.
  8. Give your recommendation.  Who would like /not like the book?
  9. Rate the book from 1 to 10.

The Dos and Don'ts of Presenting

DO'SDON'TS
Make eye contact with your audience. Look up.Don't look at the ground or at your book
the entire time.


Use "cue cards" with keywords
as your guide.
Don't use or read from your written assignment.
Speak slowly and clearly.Don't rush or finish quickly.
You want your audience to remember what you have said.
Speak loudly.Don't mumble, whisper, or put your hands in front of your face.
Be enthousiastic.
Show some interest.
Don't sound bored by the book.
Use "all" your voice.Don't talk like a machine, or in monotones.
Make us want to read your story.Don't tell us your story.  Do not give away the ending.
