ASSIGNMENT:  Refer to your teacher's assignment sheet for details and the marking guide.

Step 1:

THE REFERENCE COLLECTION

GENERAL ENCYCLOPEDIAS such as:

  • World Book  or World Book Online

A general encyclopedia covers historical topics very well and gives a general overview of your topic. Reading through some general information may also help you narrow in your subject of research.

SPECIALIZED SCIENCE REFERENCES include:

  • The Gale Encyclopedia of Science [REF 505 GAL]
  • The McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science and Technology [REF 503 MACG]
  • How it Works : the illustrated encyclopedia of science and technology [REF 603 HOW]

Search Topics may include:  Radioactivity / Radiation / Nuclear Power

Step 2:

Use VSB LIBRARY (the online catalogue) to locate materials in our school library.

  • Choose "Subject Keyword" search.

GENERAL SUBJECT TERMS may be:

                      Radioactivity
                      Radiation
                      Nuclear Power
                      Atomic Energy

SPECIFIC SUBJECT TERMS will be determined as you narrow down your subject.

Example:  If you choose a topic related to the uses of Radioactivity in Medicine, then you may want to search for information on X-rays, or Radiology. Always choose a general subject heading and then narrow down your topic.

Remember to write down the complete call number (# and letters) to locate items on the shelf.

Step 3:

"DATABASE" resources found through the VSB LIBRARY link.

  • Student Research Centre
Tip: Remember to put a check mark in the FULL TEXT box.
  • World Book Encyclopedia On-Line
