Celebrating coaches at VEPAA (Vancouver Elementary Physical Activity Association)

Feb 6 gathering at Van Dusen

Coaches leave a lasting impact on students’ lives and in turn, strengthen communities. Sports reinforces bonds between students, giving them a sense of belonging and a stronger connection to their communities.

On February 6, coaches across VSB gathered to celebrate the dedication of coaches who play such an integral role in the formation of students’ character and development. Curtis Lai, vice president of the Vancouver Elementary Physical Activity Association (VEPAA), began the evening with a short speech about how coaching sports not only helps students learn to self-regulate but also fosters co-regulation.

He used the Indigenous view of trees as sacred beings to describe co-regulation. “We are trees surrounded by other individuals who are also trees. While the roots represent sources of knowledge — ourselves, others and the natural world — our supports are stronger when we work together.”

As much as coaching brings happiness and satisfaction to students, Barb Hinds, president of VEPPA, shared that she also volunteers to coach for the sense of purpose it provides.

“At the end of the day, there are times when you wonder, what’s the highlight of your day?” Coaching provides that fulfilment.

Over the next few minutes, she read excerpts outlining coaching highlights from several recipients of the 20-year recognition awards. Stories they shared were not only about winning games and tournaments but also about the gratification of coaching school sports.

Hinds shared highlights such as travelling as a team, the exhilaration of almost winning, the joy of seeing students whom others might not see as athletes but who ultimately surprise everyone and the realization that the neighbourhood coach for your girls’ basketball team is actually Debbie Huband, an Olympic basketball player! Hinds expressed gratitude to have worked with many inspirational teacher-coaches throughout the years.

After the speeches, VEPAA welcomed new coaches this year with their inaugural whistle, while 20-year veteran coaches received a coveted VSB cardigan and a unique framed caricature.
