District to host Drum Across Kanata event for National Indigenous Peoples Day

| Categories: Indigenous, Events & Celebrations

To celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day (June 21), the Vancouver School District is hosting a virtual drumming circle called Drum Across Kanata (Canada) on June 21.

Drum Across Kanata is open to all willing to continue to learn about National Indigenous Peoples Day and National Indigenous History Month. On June 21, drums will be raised in honour of Chief Rosanne Casimir and the Tk’emlups te Secwépmc Nation.

Join in and be witness to the drumming, rattling, singing, and sharing of cultural teachings from students, mentors, Elders, Knowledge keepers, Indigenous educators and drum groups from across the nation.

“Drum Across Kanata is about coming together to make our drums and voices heard across Kanata,” says Chas Desjarlais, district principal of Indigenous Education. “As a District, we lift up our drums on National Indigenous Peoples Day in honour of our ancestors. May they hear our voices and hear our songs.”

Davita Marsden, the lead coordinator for Drum Across Kanata says the event is open to all that wish to witness. "Let us lift children up, unite all peoples, and increase awareness of Indigenous education through drumming and song," says Marsden.
