Musician Khari Wendell McClelland celebrates Black History Month with Renfrew Elementary students

Students at Renfrew Elementary were in for a treat earlier this week.  They had an opportunity to watch a live concert by Vancouver musician, Khari Wendell McClelland. On his Freedom Singer album, McClelland reimagines the music fugitive slaves carried on their journey north into Canada.  His music tells stories of how his ancestors used music to lift themselves out of oppression from slavery and racism.  Students had a wonderful time clapping and singing along as McClelland invited the students to interact.

After the show dozens of hands flew up to ask questions.

“Are you in Spotify? When did you start singing? What is your favourite song?”

Soon it was lunch time, but before that, students lined up gleefully to get autographs.
