Vancouver School Board re-elects chair and elects a new vice-chair

(Vancouver B.C.) - At the November 2024 public Board meeting, the Board re-elected trustee Victoria Jung as chair and elected trustee Janet Fraser as vice-chair for the upcoming one-year term. 

Trustee Jung was first elected in the 2022 municipal election and served as Board chair in the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 terms. Trustee Fraser was elected in 2014 municipal election and served as Board chair for four one-year terms, as well as on several standing committees of the Board. 

During the 2023-2024 term – the second year of its four-year term – the Board advanced its governance practices. It also continued to deepen relationships with the three Host Nations, xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwxwú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation) & səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh Nation). Additionally, the Board improved learning environments and supported student success with approval of the 2023-2024 Framework for Enhancing Student Learning annual report. It also took measures to improve learning environments for students by restricting students’ use of personal mobile devices and supported enhanced student digital literacy. It adopted a balanced budget as part of its financial planning duties and approved capital plans. Additionally, the Board welcomed funding approval by the provincial government to build a new school in Olympic Village and expand Henry Hudson Elementary. It also celebrated the completion of seismic replacement projects including at Eric Hamber Secondary School and David Lloyd George Elementary School. 

Annually, trustees elect a chair and vice-chair to serve a one-year term.
