Operations ensures district facilities remain safe, functional, compliant, and ready to support teaching and learning every day through building operations, custodial services, life safety systems, indoor air quality, facility rentals, and operational support.
The Operations Department plays a vital role in ensuring Vancouver School Board facilities remain safe, clean, comfortable, and fully operational. Our team provides a broad range of services that support the day-to-day operation and maintenance of district buildings, helping schools and worksites function effectively for students, staff, and the community.
What We Do
The Operations Department manages and supports:
- Building Security
- Building Systems (HVAC, heating, ventilation, mechanical and related building systems)
- Custodial and Cleaning Services
- Indoor Air Quality Monitoring and Investigations
- Life Safety Systems (fire alarm systems, emergency lighting, fire extinguishers, and life safety inspections)
- Preventative Maintenance Programs
- Operational Maintenance Coordination and Minor Repairs
- Facility & Community Rentals
- Safety Inspections and Regulatory Compliance
- Operational Support for Schools and District Facilities

Support for Schools
The Building Engineer or Head Custodian coordinates daily operations and works closely with school administration and district departments to ensure facilities are safe, functional, and well maintained.
Building Engineers oversee building systems, life safety systems, preventative maintenance activities, and operational performance, while Head Custodians support the daily care, cleanliness, safety, and functionality of school facilities.
