Project Updates

January 2026 update

The City of Vancouver is processing the rezoning application for the new school in Olympic Village. See below “May 2025 update” for further details. Once the City completes its review, the project will proceed to a public hearing. A public hearing is where City Council considers the rezoning application and hears from the public before making a decision. Members of the public can attend or share feedback and can visit the City’s website for more information.

While the rezoning review has been taking place, VSB continues to advance the school’s design. During this time, architects are refining the design based on early engagement by reaching out to inherent rights holders, formal stakeholder groups, educators and staff with experience working in multi-level school buildings, students who learn in multi-level environments, and students and families living in the Olympic Village area.

The evolving design will carefully consider how the school fits within the surrounding neighbourhood and supports the long-term needs of the Olympic Village community.

May 2025 update

In May 2025, VSB submitted a rezoning application to the City of Vancouver to enable the development of a new school in Olympic Village.

The rezoning application addresses key considerations, including:

  • Increase the building height from the currently allowable 13.5m to 18.8 m  which allows for an additional floor level to accommodate the necessary student capacity of 630 students.
  • Propose an outdoor play and learning area on the roof of the building, to off-set the lack of dedicated play areas on the ground level.
  • Assess transportation requirements that support and encourage sustainable modes of travel (eg. biking, walking, rolling).

More details about the rezoning application can be found on the City’s website

As part of the rezoning application process, members of the public were invited to review the materials and submit feedback from July 16, 2025 to July 29, 2025. A summary of common questions and responses is available in the frequently asked questions section.

April 2025 update

To advance the design and construction of a new school, the Vancouver School Board (VSB) must obtain the necessary approvals from the City of Vancouver, including a rezoning, development permit and building permit. The rezoning application will address minor changes to the current zoning that was established nearly 20 years ago.

The city permit processes are critical steps in aligning the project with the current context while ensuring it adheres to modern building codes, sustainability standards and overall design principles.

Community members can share their feedback during the rezoning process. We will also seek input from inherent rights holders, VSB’s formal stakeholder groups, interested parties and the public as the process advances. Details about how to share your feedback with the City of Vancouver will be provided as they become available.

Feedback received will help refine the design to ensure the school not only meets the current educational needs but also supports the long-term growth and vibrancy of the Olympic Village neighborhood. There will be several opportunities to provide feedback.
