June marks the beginning of Pride season! Running from June to September, Pride brings new opportunities to learn about and celebrate the diversity, resilience and contributions of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. It is also a time to remember the history of activism and advocating for equal rights as we work toward a more inclusive world. 

All year long, VSB focuses on creating safe, inclusive and welcoming spaces for all. In June, schools across the District celebrate and learn about Pride through a variety of activities and events. 

While there are many Pride events taking place this month, a few are shared below: 

Selkirk Elementary and Selkirk Annex 

On June 5, Selkirk Elementary and Selkirk Annex came together to celebrate Pride! 

The day began with Selkirk Elementary’s Diversity Club leaders reading stories to various classes. Later, students, staff and community members participated in a Pride parade throughout the neighbourhood. Each division wore a different colour, creating a human rainbow. 

Once returning to the school, the celebrations continued with a dance party and rainbow-coloured treats. 

Norma Rose Point Elementary 

To celebrate the importance of inclusion, kindergarten students at Norma Rose Point organized a tire wash fundraiser on June 3! 

With help from Grade 7s, the students cleaned the tires of cars, bikes and scooters. Together, they raised more than $1,000 in support of local 2SLGBTQIA+ organizations. Pride celebrations continued throughout the month, including a Pride art walk, workshops and presentations from local organizations and a Pride picnic hosted by the school’s PAC. 

Gladstone Secondary 

Gladstone’s gender-sexuality alliance and scrapbook club collaborated to create a large scrapbook pride flag. The students spent months on the project, creating it to spread the message of inclusion.
