Speaking from our Art: Alternative and Alternate Programs Art Fair
Students from 15 Alternative and Alternate programs from the Vancouver School Board collectively put together an arts extravaganza. The variety show included singing, dance, singalong, and a large public gallery display of multimedia art at the Roundhouse Community Centre from April 17-21, 2023. A much-anticipated annual event, the arts fair is born out of the passion by the staff and volunteers making it possible to run each and every year for more than 50 years.
Students expressed how art is transformative for their overall wellbeing. Being able express oneself in a supportive environment is key to mental health, which is essential for learning and personal growth.
“You want to cope as healthily as you can when you have a lot of things on your plate. So, I try to turn that into something pretty or expressive if I can,” says student artist Elliet, from Total Education program.
Dustin Thorkelsson, teacher at East Van Education Centre and MC for the performances, was really impressed by the display of talent.
“We are hoping to encourage other students that come and watched today, that maybe in the future they will be able to come out to showcase their art. It is a very uplifting and inspiring experience.”
