The Vancouver School Board’s Education Plan Committee meeting was held on the evening of Wednesday, June 14, 2023. More details can be found on the agenda package or by viewing the live stream recording. 

The meeting’s agenda included one topic: an Indigenous Education Council Report on Framework for Enhancing Student Learning and Aboriginal Enhancement Agreement.  
 

The information update provided an overview about self-identified Indigenous learners’ development and academic achievement for the school year. This includes emotional, physical, intellectual and spiritual domains. The report looked at three domains: Belonging, Mastery and Culture and Community. The updated highlighted activities with and supports for Indigenous learners to ensure advance each domain area. Committee members learned about cultural programming like the creation of drums and rattles, the sharing of traditional songs with schools, and the creation of a First Peoples’ Festival, as well as about enhanced support with literary and numeracy programming for Indigenous learners. Details about efforts to advance the Culture and Community domain were also noted for committee members, including different learning opportunities and collaborations with xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) and various other nations, as well as bi-weekly meetings between staff with xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) education department and District’s Indigenous education department. Staff informed the committee that that the 5-year and 6-year completion rates have increased over the last five years. The 5-year completion rate grew to 60 per cent last year, up from 43 per cent in the 2017-2018 school year. The 6-year completion rate grew from to 73 per cent last year to 56 per cent  in the same five-year period. The presentation concluded with an affirmation that Vancouver School Board and Indigenous Education will continue to uphold the Education Plan goals. 

This was the last Education Plan Committee meeting for the year. The next meeting will be scheduled in the fall.
