Superintendent’s update
Superintendent Helen McGregor’s update to the Board opened the meeting by acknowledging contributions of Sue Bains, a long-time volunteer at John Oliver Secondary. Extending the celebration of appreciation, she noted World Teachers Day and National Principals Month, acknowledging the care, expertise and dedication of staff. McGregor’s update also highlighted student innovation at STEAM Discovery Day and VSB’s ongoing commitment to inclusive education. She recounted recent family information sessions and encouraged families to access resources, including the “After the Bell” podcast and family information sessions. The Board heard updates on the introduction of kindergarten literacy screeners, recent athletic achievements, Indigenous student leadership and a reminder that priority kindergarten registration begins November 1. McGregor also highlighted staff professional learning, including a Pro D sessions focused on inclusive education, with educators from neighbouring districts joining VSB staff.
Student trustee report
Student trustee Zhang reported that the Vancouver District Students Council (VDSC) held its General Meeting on October 14, that included elections for junior executive positions. Twenty-seven candidates ran for eight roles. Zhang also highlighted CANley Cup, an annual initiative addressing food insecurity through partnerships with the Greater Vancouver Food Bank and local food hubs. He informed the Board that the VDSC leadership retreat is scheduled for November 25 and student leadership grant applications are open until December 1.
Board business
The Board received the report from the policy and governance committee. As a matter arising, trustees considered two revised policies: Board Policy 7: Board operations and Policy 8: Board committees. Both policies were revised following extensive review and feedback from stakeholder groups and inherent rights holders’ representatives. An ad hoc working group of trustees incorporated that feedback into the drafts. The Board approved the revised Policy 7 and adopted revisions to Policy 8. Trustees also struck an ad hoc committee to develop a draft trustee remuneration and expense policy.
The education plan committee report was received. As a matter arising, the Board approved a Board/Authority Authorized course, First Peoples Visual Arts 12. Developed by VSB Indigenous teachers specializing in traditional art and textile practices, the course explores connections between people, land, story and art. It will be available for implementation at any secondary school in 2026-27, providing students with opportunities to explore Indigenous perspectives and ways of knowing, with an initial focus on the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Nations.
Question period
Members of the public were invited to submit questions to the Board about governance matters or items on that meeting agenda. No questions were submitted for this month’s meeting.
