Festive spirit shines at John Oliver’s Life Skills dance
The festive season was in full swing at John Oliver Secondary last Friday afternoon (December 12). The cafeteria turned into a lively hub for the third annual holiday dance for students in VSB’s Life Skills Program.
About 120 students from secondary schools across the school district joined in. Many reconnected with friends they hadn’t seen in a long time. A fully accessible and inclusive event, it featured a concession stand and quiet spaces for breaks. Some students wore noise-cancelling headphones. Others danced in their wheelchairs. Everyone had a chance to enjoy the celebration in their own way.
The JO senior band kicked off things off, performing a few holiday favourites. Student DJs kept the beat going with a mix of seasonal classics and top 40 dance hits. Staff joined the fun, including a conga line, proving no holiday celebration is complete without it.
One student summed up the day: “I really liked this and danced a lot! I’ve been dancing my whole life.”
The success of this event reflects the dedication of staff organizers, the energy of JO student volunteers and the enthusiasm of every student who came ready to celebrate together.
