John Oliver Joker Slam 2013 Wrestling Tournament Connects School with University Wrestlers and Olympians

Early in November, John Oliver (JO) Secondary School Community Schools Team hosted an amazing wrestling event. The full day event gave Metro Vancouver's young wrestlers a unique opportunity to learn tips and tricks from university wrestling athletes and world class clinicians, such as three time Olympic medalist Tonya Verbeek, World Universaide champion and Team BC Coach Lindsay Belisle, and former world champion Chris Wilson.

Secondary school teams from Vancouver, Burnaby, New Westminster and Vancouver Island, as well as other lower mainland communities, were all invited to attend the free event. The John Oliver Band, Drum Line and Dance Squad, as well as Kelly Reid (representing Mabel Elmore, MLA), JO wrestling alumni, and other dignitaries attended the event.

WrestlersOver the course of the day, wrestlers at all levels took part in clinics covering wrestling technique and skills and also learned about goal setting. JO wrestlers got practical advice on working toward the Olympic Games from experienced and decorated wrestlers. The day also included both University and high school level exhibitions and matches.

Event partners included Vancouver Board of Education, Simon Fraser University, University of British Columbia, University of Winnipeg, BC Wrestling Association, and Wrestling Lutte Canada.
