Windermere Students Organize Fifth Annual Climate Conference

Windermere Secondary School students are in the midst of organizing their fifth annual Climate Change Conference (C3) titled Youth Rising.

This year's C3 event will take place on November 22, 2013 at Windermere Secondary School (3155 E 27th Ave) from 9-3 PM.

The youth led event will target climate justice issues that face society today to teach young people how to take action around climate change issues. Inspiring youth and educating them at the same time, this conference has attracted up to 300 students from across the lower mainland in previous years.

Past keynote speakers have included Seth Klein of the CCPA and Jim Hoggan of the David Suzuki Foundation. Meanwhile, previous conferences have covered a wide array of topics such as Climate Justice, First Nations and Climate Impacts, the Athabasca Tar Sands, the Pipeline and Tanker issue along with fracking, zero waste, transportation issues and much more. Organizers say past conferences have inspired many youth to take action on various issues.

This year's conference focus is to promote the importance of youth engagement and participation in creating a more just and sustainable future. The keynote panel this year will feature Andrew Weaver, former Nobel Peace Prize winner for his work as a climate scientist. He will be talking about the reason he made the switch from academia to the political realm and why he feels it is important for youth to take a stand on environmental issues. Alongside Weaver will be two recent VSB grads, Neelam Khare and Tesicca Truong. Truong recently took second place in Canada's top twenty five under twenty five environmentalists, while Khare was a part of the Canadian Youth Delegation that participated in the 2012 UN Climate negotiations in Qatar.

Windermere  students will be hosting C3 as a zero waste event and hope to see as many youths and students attending as possible.  To register or if you have any questions  please visit c3vancity.com or contact windermerec3@gmail.com
