Elsie Roy Elementary is bursting at the seams with leaders. 40 leaders to be precise. As part of the Leaders Taking Action (LTA) club, these students spend many of their lunch hours organizing fundraising and awareness activities to shine a light on both global and local issues, which need the school's support.

This year the school sent a big contingent (20 students) to the ground floor of Rogers Arena for the big We-Day event. Students were invited to the event as a reward for their hard work raising $6,352 for charities through a variety of activities such as selling buttons for Valentine's Day, an annual family BBQ and penny drives (among other fundraisers). The club is now gearing up for a "We Scare Hunger" campaign. Teachers say most of LTA's success has been student orchestrated.

"Our leadership group has an executive council this year, with the President and Vice President leading the charge with the initiatives we are planning for the year. Our students are absolutely devoted to making positive change in this world," said Elsie Roy teacher Amarit Marwaha.

The money raised by the Elsie Roy community has gone around the world to support students in Sierra Leone with the construction of a school. After their global success, both Marwaha and fellow teacher Melissa McCleary are hoping their kids will channel their philanthropy towards local initiatives. These days the LTA club has developed a list of a dozen local initiatives (including Covenant House and the Food Bank), which could use their support. Student leaders have been tasked with selecting where they'll devote their next round of community spirit.
