Windermere Secondary Athena Arts students installed a model for "the organizational structure for life itself", known as a mandala, out front of the school. The 'mandala' is designed to create a welcoming atmosphere for students, staff and visitors. Made from recycled tires donated by Pedal Power, Athena Arts students weaved yarn and fabric on their rims and spokes to create a striking display. Inspiration for the mandala came from Donna Sheh of The Vancouver Biennale. Sheh was enlisted to mentor the students based on a grant awarded to Athena Arts Coordinator Shannon Leddy, who led the students through their artistic exploration.

"It's a real privilege to be able to encourage creativity in the next generation of artists and art thinkers. I can't wait to see where the next year will take us," says Leddy.

As part of their year's work, Athena Arts students also attended an Art Crawl at the Collingwood Neighbourhood House. Their theme for the year was an identity project that focused on topics such as stereotypes, community, place and space. A similar event was held at the school on Friday, June 13, which displayed some of the works of 30 students in Grades 8 through 12 mini school. Although students worked collaboratively, they displayed their photographs and works of art individually with each piece of art revealing the artist behind the art.
