Vancouver School Board decides to surplus Queen Elizabeth Annex

Vancouver, B.C. – On Tuesday, April 11, 2023, at a Special Board meeting, the Vancouver School Board voted to declare the Queen Elizabeth Annex (QEA) as surplus to the educational needs of the District. The decision comes after the Board voted to close QEA on June 6, 2022, at a public Board meeting.

On November 28, 2022, the Board approved proceeding with a public engagement process, regarding the surplus declaration process, which occurred from January to March of 2023. In alignment with Board policy, the District engaged with stakeholders, local government agencies, school communities and neighbourhood associations in the vicinity of the QEA site and reached out to the three-host Nations. The engagement summary report detailing What We Heard was presented to the Facilities and Planning Committee on April 5, 2023 and the Board also heard delegations about the surplus consideration on April 5.

Following the Board’s decision, District staff will communicate this decision to staff and families in the QEA school community and other nearby school communities on April 12, 2023.

As per Board Policy 20 – Disposal of Land or Improvements, the District will initiate the land disposition process.
