Welcome to our new Superintendent of Schools

On behalf of the Vancouver Board of Education, it is my pleasure to welcome Steve Cardwell to School District No. 39 as the new Superintendent of Schools in Vancouver.  Mr. Cardwell is coming to the VSB from the Delta School District where he has been Superintendent of Schools and Chief Executive Officer since 2007.

Mr. Cardwell is a strong advocate for public education with a progressive vision for 21st century learning. He comes highly recommended to this board, and we are confident he will work effectively with trustees, our stakeholders, staff and students to realize our goal of enabling success for all students.

Mr. Cardwell has been an educator since 1980 and has worked in support of teaching and learning with staff and students in Delta since 1991. He has been actively involved in leadership roles with the educational community for nearly 30 years has been a member of various Provincial Curriculum, Assessment and Examination Committees during this time. He is also the Vice President of the BC School Superintendents' Association (BCSSA).

Mr. Cardwell holds a B.Sc. (Biology), Professional Teaching Certificate and a research-based M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction from UBC. He is currently pursuing a doctorate in Educational Leadership at SFU focusing on student engagement in urban secondary schools.

He has lived in Delta along with his wife, Maryann, and two children for the past 20 years and is known for his valuing of ethical responsibility, building and fostering strong working relationships, leading with technology and exemplary communication skills.

Mr. Cardwell is expected to start his new role as early as January.
