ALT is a new pilot project that brings Emily Carr students together with students from the Britannia Secondary School Alternative program 8J-9J to create art and learn together.

Five Emily Carr students helped launch the new project. Joni Danielson, Sarah Spetch, Alex Gray, Ellen Russell and Jackie Harris all worked as artists in residence at Britannia Secondary. Collectively they researched and developed projects based on their individual art and design practices to create a diverse program for 8J-9J and the Outreach students. The aim of the residency was to create opportunities to make art and learn together.

"This pilot is part of a course called Art + Pedagogy, which was jointly developed two years ago by Emily Carr University of Art and Design (ECUAD) and the Vancouver School Board's West 1 Community Schools Team (CST)," says Holly Schmidt, Instructor at Emily Carr University of Art and Design. "Since then the course has been successfully offered each fall and spring to Emily Carr students who have shown an interest in art education, child and youth engagement, and community-based practice." 

The Art + Pedagogy course allows students to focus on social practice, ecology and sustainability, documentary practices or community projects as a minor for their degree.
