Franklin Elementary students came out to help raise bird-nesting boxes and plant perennials before the grand opening celebration of the Creekway Park Restoration Project this September.

Creekway Park on Bridgeway Street is a living creek that was paved over many years ago. Recently, it has been restored and the hope is it will have salmon flowing through it again one day. 

"To see the change over the last six months is incredible," says Mark Angelo, BCIT Rivers Institute Chair. "This was a barren, gravel parking lot not that long ago. Now, to see what it is today"� it's an amazing change."

The parking lot it used to house has been transformed into an ecological corridor with native plants, bird habitat and paths. The creek has been "day-lighted," and now connects the Sanctuary in Hastings Park to the ocean.

Dozens of John Franklin Elementary students participated in the reclamation by helping nest boxes and plant perennials at the Creekway Park opening.
